Prince Charles on Radio 4

I was woken up this morning by the Prince of Wales. His dulcet tones drifted to my ears during Radio 4's Thought for the Day. Although it took me a few drowsy seconds to realise whose voice it was, my ears pricked when he discussed religious persecution.

Prince Charles stoked controversy several years ago when he expressed a desire to be the defender of faith in general, rather than the Christian faith in particular. A number of Christians I knew were particularly troubled by this. I was not. I treasure religious freedom. Although I know that only Christ saves, I will defend anyone's civil right to reject His offer of eternal life. I hope the right will not be exercised, but if often is. We nonconformists were once persecuted for our stance; may we now rejoice our future head of state will seek to preserve that freedom.
