Human Rights Day

Today is Human Rights day. In Britain, this expression sometimes carries negative overtones. This is because we have enjoyed basic rights in this country for centuries and have taken them for granted. It is also because 'human rights' have allegedly been the reason why our courts cannot deport foreign rapists or hate-preachers.

Let's remember though that many countries are not like ours. Free speech, freedom of religion and fair elections simply don't exist in some places. This video is a good explanation of what they are and how they developed: https://youtu.be/oh3BbLk5UIQ

The Cyrus the Great who features is named in the Bible and does indeed come across positively. In fact, the entire concept of human rights is biblical. We humans are special. We have rights because we are human, not because we are clever, or white, or male.
