’Tis my happiness below,

But the Saviour’s power to know,

Trials must and will befall;
But with humble faith to see

For a second December running, I find myself in the Yorkshire Dales addressing fifty teenagers on a New Year Christian camp. Last year, I spoke on some mountains of scripture; this year, rather unimaginatively, I shall talk about some Old Testament valleys: Hinnom, Elah, Dry Bones and Baca.

I like carvings and sculptures, but I prefer they were not in church, nor of supernatural figures. The handsome carving of the Lord Jesus found on the pulpit of Brindle Parish Church I therefore admire with mixed emotions. I did ponder its place on the pulpit. As the preacher preaches, so this wooden sculpture gazes on, beholding the very congregation as they hear the real Jesus’ words of life.
