When children (and probably adults) visit an old castle, most want to inspect the dungeon. This is ironic, because anyone who lived in the age of the castle would have considered this room the last place they should like to see. Bolton Castle in the Yorkshire village of Castle Bolton does not disappoint in this regard.

The Hartebrugkerk is the oldest Roman Catholic parish church in the Dutch city of Leiden, at which I called in the summer. It was the first openly Roman church after freedom of religion was granted in 1798. It is an opulent as one might imagine such an establishment to be, with classical façade, elegant furnishings and white and gold décor; this is a place of worship with panache.

Do you notice anything odd about the picture, above? It contains two medieval parish churches, next door to each other, and sharing a churchyard. The leftward is St Lawrence's, now redundant, and the rightward is All Saints', which still functions.
