Preachers Meeting

Tonight, 6-7 will be meeting at Salem to discuss preaching. Some of us having been preaching for years, others have just begun. We’ll be looking at the following questions:

What is good preaching?

How do you choose a text?

How do you prepare?

How do you lay out your notes?

Should we know Hebrew and Greek?

Should we re-use sermons?

For how long should we preach?

Is feeling nervous a good or bad thing?

We live in dark days when few people know Biblical truth, and the standard of preaching in many churches is poor. What passes for a feast today would have been considered mere dog food thirty years ago. If Salem Chapel has half a dozen men who preach the Bible with clarity and honesty, this chapel will truly be a beacon shining on Newby Hill.

To keep us all humble, though, I’ll be reminding everyone of this verse:

James 3:1: My brethren, be not many teachers, knowing that we shall receive the severer judgment.
