Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos

Tonight we had our annual Songs of Praise event, based around Sankey’s Sacred Hymns and Solos. We projected pictures of Moody and Sankey and sang six evocative gospel songs, with their appropriate bible texts explained.

You can hear it here http://www.martintop.org.uk/multimedia/podcasts/songs-praise-full-service . Skip the first 6 minutes or so to cut out the introductions.

823 Come ye that Love the Lord

Jeremiah 31:6: For there shall be a day

When the watchmen will cry on Mount Ephraim,

‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion,

To the Lord our God.’”

Come, we that love the Lord,

and let our joys be known;

join in a song with sweet accord,

join in a song with sweet accord

and thus surround the throne,

and thus surround the throne.

We're marching to Zion,

beautiful, beautiful Zion;

we're marching upward to Zion,

the beautiful city of God.

390 Sinners Jesus will receive

Luke 15:2 And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.”

Sinners Jesus will receive;

  Sound this word of grace to all

Who the heavenly pathway leave,

  All who linger, all who fall.

 Sing it o’er and o’er again;

Christ receiveth sinful men;

Make the message clear and plain:

  Christ receiveth sinful men.

607- I am thine O Lord

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Hebrews 10:22

I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,

  And it told Thy love to me;

But I long to rise in the arms of faith,

  And be closer drawn to Thee.

 Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,

  To the cross where Thou hast died;

Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,

    To Thy precious, bleeding side.

964 There’s a land

Numbers 27:12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.

There's a land that is fairer than day,

And by faith we can see it afar;

For the Father waits over the way

To prepare us a dwelling place there.

In the sweet by and by,

We shall meet on that beautiful shore;

In the sweet by and by,

We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

944 I've reached the land

Isaiah 62: You shall also be a crown of glory

In the hand of the Lord,

And a royal diadem

In the hand of your God.

4 You shall no longer be termed Forsaken,

Nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate;

But you shall be called Hephzibah,[a] and your land Beulah;[b]

For the Lord delights in you,

And your land shall be married.

5 For as a young man marries a virgin,

So shall your sons marry you;

And as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,

So shall your God rejoice over you.

I’ve reached the land of corn and wine,

And all its riches freely mine;

Here shines undimmed one blissful day,

For all my night has passed away.

O Beulah Land, sweet Beulah Land,

As on thy highest mount I stand,

I look away across the sea,

Where mansions are prepared for me,

And view the shining glory shore,

My Heav’n, my home forever more!

Softly and Tenderly 414

Mark 10:49 Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! On your feet! He's calling you."

1 Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,

calling for you and for me;

see, on the portals he's waiting and watching,

watching for you and for me.

Come home, come home;

you who are weary come home;

earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,

calling, O sinner, come home!
