Alec Passmore: Distributing Hebrew Scriptures

It was great to hear Dr Alec Passmore at Holden Chapel’s Harvest last week. As well as preaching a good gospel message, he shared some of his activity with The Society for Distributing Hebrew Scriptures. He recalled recently working in a part of Manchester known for its Jewish population. He approached a woman sweeping up leaves on her street and asked if she was Jewish. When she said she was, he offered her a copy of the New Testament. Not wishing to spoil his story for any who might hear it, she received it with joy.

The Society’s website says:

God gave the Holy Scriptures to man as the one true source of light. He chose Jewish writers as the instrument to pen His word and to carefully preserve it down through the centuries. The Hebrew heritage of the Word of God is real, and a great debt is owed to the Jewish people for this most precious gift. Out of gratitude to them and in partial repayment of our debt, The Society for Distributing Hebrew Scriptures exists to provide Jewish people worldwide with a free copy of the Holy Scriptures in bilingual format, i.e. in Hebrew and in the reader’s daily tongue.

No-one can approach God without coming through His appointed door- Christ. This applies to both Jew and gentile. And yet God still has an affection for the Jews for the sake of Abraham. Giving these people the very scriptures that their forbears penned is a worthy mission if ever there was one.

So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.
