Bolsover Castle
I called at Bolsover Castle this month. Although it looks very much like a castle, with its battlements, crenelations, towers and gatehouses, this is certainly no fortress. It was built by the Cavendish family, who were the Dukes of Portland and also Devonshire, as a luxurious mansion. Although sitting on the site of an older, Norman fortification, the current structure was designed to offer cavalier comforts and elegant living rather than security and protection. This is a pleasure palace, not a stronghold.
Many Christians who deign to attend church are looking for pleasure palaces rather than bastions of truth. For the sake of a preferred style of music, a comfortable chair, a good-looking singing group and a literal light show, they will compromise on other, essential areas. Impressive though Bolsover was, it would not keep safe those who shelter within; weak, entertainment-based churches cannot keep out the enemy.
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10, NKJV
