The Church of Scotland and Evolving Marriage

The Church of Scotland is moving closer this week to endorsing same sex marriage, or 'equal marriage', as liberals prefer to call it.

One cleric who supports equal marriage, said: "Loving marriages, whether they are gay or straight, can make for a good and happy life. Christ's love for us, his people, is reflected in loving relationships. Marriage is something to be celebrated. I look forward to the day when I am able to conduct weddings for all couples, gay or straight, in the name of God."

Once marriage is justified simply as the basis of loving someone, all sorts of relationships can be justified. How about a man who commits adultery? He may have genuinely fallen out of love with his wife, and may be genuinely attracted to the personality and character of his mistress. Is this love a reflection of 'Christ's love for us'?

Or how about the polygamist? He might say he loves his three wives equally. He might be sincere, explaining that he would lay down his life for any of them. After all, we love our multiple children and grandparents equally, why not spouses? So if genuine love is the only requirement for marriage, let us have multiple marriage partners. Scottish Clergy, in a decade or so, will doubtless come around to the idea so long as public opinion swings that way first. The reverend gentleman told the BBC in 2011 that 'marriage has always been an evolving institution'.
