Cleaning, Clearing, Dumping and Reviving
A big thank you to everyone who came and helped with the big clean up at Hetton Chapel last week. The gutters were cleared, the overgrowth cut back, the walls, chairs and kitchen were thoroughly washed and a tuneless, broken piano was rolled down the path towards the conclusion of its discordant career. We hope to have weekly Sunday services from January, with a more publicised official opening and outreach calendar from the spring.
Hetton Chapel was initially built during, or as a result of, the great 1859 revival (of which I had the pleasure of discovering its own, dedicated website) and it functioned right up until 2019 when the Methodist denomination decided it was right to call time. With some apprehension and feeling of our own inadequacy, we seek to re-open the doors for public worship, as well as for the general benefit the local community, but particularly as a place where people can find life and hope in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Few would describe this as a revival, or anticipate it will have immediate and dramatic effects, but the days of small things will often yield fruitful, longer term results.
