Evangelist

At our last Church Meeting, it was agreed we would seek to appoint someone to lead our evangelism. I read Stephen Kneale's blog from 15th July which declares that anyone can do evangelism- "If we know the gospel, have the Holy Spirit, a mouth and someone to tell, then we have everything we need to just get on and share the gospel." I think he has reacted against the many courses, training events and manuals that profess to prepare us for evangelism, but become a substitute for it. So yes, any Christian can and should do it. Yet the evangelist is a distinctive office in the church, as taught by the New Testament. This would suggest that to do it correctly and consistently, a particular call and competency is required.

Although we are blessed to have people at Salem Chapel who travel to Manchester each week to share the good news, and we might soon be re-opening our market stall, the church members are seeking someone to oversee this. We are not a wealthy church, but we have laid aside some modest funds to remunerate this person, if required, with a view to leading outreach for 2022.
