Everlasting Sweet Pea
One of the pleasures of growing Sweet Pea is the wonderful scent. Yet the Everlasting Pea, despite coming back each year and looking as colourful as its annual cousin, has one major difference. Their respective Latin names give the game away:
Lathyrus latifolius (‘everlasting’) and Lathyrus odoratus (annual).
It might have a fancy name and bright colours, but alas, it lacks the plant’s most wonderful characteristic- smell. And judging by the bare patch in my back garden, they aren’t everlasting in any event.
A human being without communion with God looks like any other, but is missing that significant and essential component of authentic humanity.
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible...All things were created through Him and for Him. Col 1:16
