Fireworks

We had fireworks at the chapel on Friday night. They were really to celebrate the Tattersalls' House Warming, but coincided with many Bonfire Night celebrations. I remember ‘burning a Guy’ when I was a child; we would destroy an effigy of Guy Fawkes commemorating his and his mates’ attempts at blowing up Parliament in 1605. Someone once said that Fawkes was the only person to enter Parliament with honest intentions; in reality he wished to destroy the Protestant government and replace it with a Catholic one.

I am sorry that Catholics were horribly persecuted in early-modern Britain, but not sorry that his attempt failed.
