Giant Sequoia
In the grounds of the Scottish cottage in which we stayed this month grows a Giant Sequoia tree. This is a redwood, the largest species of tree on earth. Its great height is supported by a wonderfully thick trunk at its base. Despite its towering size and apparent strength, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as endangered, with only 80,000 trees on the entire planet. Of shrubs and smaller trees, we have a great deal; of giants there are few. Standard Christians and mediocre preachers are two-a-penny, but spiritual giants have always been a rare breed.
