Harkening the Heralds: Healing
Hail the Heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and Life around he brings,
Ris'n with Healing in his Wings.
Wesley and Whitefield’s beautiful carol leans heavily on the prophet Malachi for its fifth section, the first half of its third verse. Writes the prophet:
But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. (4:2)
The rising sun dispels darkness and gloom, which his brother prophet, Isaiah, sees as the long night through which the peoples of earth have been walking. In its radiance and warmth are found healing and wholeness, which our dying and damaged race so desperately need. Benighted prisoners grow pale and pallid, becoming corpse-like as each black day saps strength and energy. The Lord Jesus, who is the Light of the World and the Great Physician of souls, heals and enlightens, restores and rejuvenates all who would come to Him.
Harken!
