Holy Trinity, Low Row, Swaledale

Holy Trinity Parish Church at Low Row in Swaledale is a neat if unexciting early Victorian church. It likely competed with the chapel down the road for its congregations but otherwise had an unremarkable existence, much like its interior Design. Rather charmingly, the little pipe organ still has candles affixed to it that the organist might see her music. What most struck me was the colour of the pulpit. It is made of stone and appears to be white. Pulpits are usually dark wood or honey-coloured stone; this seems quite unusual.

White often bespeaks purity. I pray that the simple, purest gospel of God’s word be preached in all our pulpits, whatever their shade; additives only reduce salubrity, they never improve it. Philosophy is interesting, and personal testimony can be helpful; poetry can be inspirational and anecdotes memorable, but only the purity of God’s word can communicate His mind and convert our dark souls.

How can a young man cleanse his way?

By taking heed according to Your word. Ps 19:9
