Illiberal Democrats

It must be bad. Even an Anglican bishop has been roused from his slumber in order to protest. The Liberal Democrat Party under Sir Ed Davey has literally deselected David Campanale, one of its General Election candidates, because of his Christian beliefs. The Bishop of Winchester, the Right Reverend Philip Mounstephen, tweeted his support for former BBC journalist Campanale and branded the decision to deselect over his Christian views as “shockingly illiberal”, commenting that William Gladstone, the great Liberal Prime Minster, would not have qualified to stand under the current anti-Christian bias.

We have known for some time that liberals are not liberal; it is now clear what that party will be like if it ever gains power or holds its balance. I do not seek to tell anyone how to vote, but it is deeply ironic that a hundred years ago, most members at Salem would have voted Liberal; the rump of the old Liberal Party is now unashamedly opposed to everything we love and live by.
