Independent Orkney

Sara Odeen-Isbister, writing for the Metro at the start of this month, reported: Orkney Islands consider breaking away from UK and Scottish governments.

Scots nationalists are used to the concept of ‘breaking away’- just not from them. But if one can break away from the United Kingdom, why not from an independent Scotland? Oh, the irony. I have little doubt that there are politicians on the Orkneys with their own agendas to fulfil, but I would still have paid a good shilling to be a fly on the wall at SNP HQ when they read that morning’s headlines.

At the Fall, we humans declared our independence from God. Perhaps Adam initially regarded himself as a philosopher, an intellectual, a freedom fighter, a man coming of age. No. It simply unleashed a whole host of independence movements and claims: children from parents, wives from husbands, criminals from communities and brothers from each other. Only in the gospel do we re-learn dependence, and only in the coming Kingdom do we experience full and glorious community.
