Inflating Money, Deflating Value

This artwork I saw in Bloomsbury, which refers to the disastrous economic policies of Zimbabwean maniac, Robert Mugabe. Inflation is when prices rise as the value of money declines. Worryingly, inflation is likely to reach over 7% this month, well over the Bank of England’s target of 2%. Items and services' costs will increase, while wage rises and savings interest rates are likely to lag.

Inflation is a great picture of the instability of human wealth. Year on year, it is eaten away, diminished and lessened. Yet for the Christian, the eternal wealth of heaven remains stable and constant. Its value could not possibly increase and neither can it decrease; heaven’s economy cannot be tempered by earthly conditions.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". Matthew 6:19-21
