Manatees

In 1493, Christopher Columbus mistook manatees for mermaids and wrote:

“They are not so beautiful as they are said to be, for their faces had some masculine traits”.

The apostle Peter wrote about false teachers:

But these...speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption, and will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime. (2:2:12-13)
