Smashing the Ten Commandments

A mentally-ill secularist has driven his car into a monument erected to the Ten Commandments in order to smash it. As he collided with the Arkansas monument, which had only been erected the previous day, he cried ‘Freedom!’. Former state governor Mike Huckabee dryly tweeted ‘some idiot in my home state broke all 10 commandments at the same time. He wasn't Moses and it wasn't Mt Sinai’. This madman accomplished what the various American secular groups, such as the American Civil Liberties Union, had been seeking to do through the courts.

This man in many ways sums up the entire human race. In a crazed bid to be free from morality, we ignore, break, smash and desecrate God’s laws. By so doing, we are instead enslaved, warped, corrupted and ruined. Try playing a game of football with no referee, or with teams playing by their own sets of rules. True football ends and vicious squabbling begins. The Ten Commandments, a helpful summary of God’s moral law, was given to our race that we might mitigate the effects of the Fall and live in relative peace with God and each other. Thus James, in chapter 1 verse 25 writes ‘But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.’

Smash and break God’s laws as much as you wish; the Judge will still hold you to account:

‘But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”’.

Romans 2:5-6
