St Nicholas Cole Abbey
The church of St Nicholas Cole Abbey is located in central London. It utilises its space as a pleasant café where Christian books can be obtained, as well as offering a series of lunchtime talks which point people to Jesus Christ. Many churches in both London and Lancashire resemble social clubs with little spiritual truth to share, but Cole Abbey’s website dispels all doubt:
It’s our hope and prayer that you’ll get to know the Lord Jesus personally and more deeply through the ministry of St Nick’s Church.
We believe the best way to know Jesus is by listening to what God has revealed about him. Teaching through books of the Bible is therefore at the heart of all that we do. Please come and join us.
It has publicly distanced itself from the Church of England’s increasing flirtation with redefined marriage and even female ordination. This seems to be a church which puts faithfulness to God’s word ahead of popularity and contemporary norms.
Although its building was reconstructed after the Great Fire and again, courtesy of the Blitz, a previous structure's walls echoed the great Methodist George Whitefield’s sermon on "Profane Swearing in Church" back in 1737. The eighteenth-century was certainly a low-point in England’s spiritual health, with high levels of church attendance but conversely low levels of real engagement. Today, one is unlikely to hear swearing in one’s parish church, but unlike Cole Abbey, one might not hear much of the gospel either.
