St Paul’s Church, Holme Eden

St Paul’s Church at Cumbria’s Warwick Bridge was built and funded by Peter Dixon, scion of the Carlisle industrial dynasty. Knowing that the existing parish church at Wetheral was too small, the diocese accepted his generous offer to build a new one. After completion, it is said that he 'loved to attend the services of God's House on the Sabbath Day, and after coming into residence at Holme Eden, he superintended the Sunday School on Sunday mornings and read the Scriptures to the sick and aged in their homes in the afternoons' (Stuart Casson). Furthermore, its architect, Dobson of Newcastle, ensured that there were no pillars or columns interfering with one’s view of the front; this was, and is, a church for people to find the truth of God.

We may not have Mr Dixon’s vast means, but we still might do all we can to share God’s truth with those we encounter, and remove any barriers and obstacles which might hinder and hamper, with the aim of showing Christ in all His magnificent majesty.

And he beheld Jesus walking by, and said, Behold that Lamb of God. John 1:36, Geneva Bible
