Standing Up for the Weak

I planted some daffodils in January which meant their growth was a little delayed. Pleasingly, it means that they are still flowering in mid-May.

One among them had not properly opened, and neither could it. It required some remedial work on my part to open it up, and even then it never looked as pretty as its neighbours. It was handicapped, but it remained a daffodil. It required some extra attention, but it was still a flower I was pleased to have planted.

Disabled people may function differently to the rest of us, and there will be some things they cannot do, while many more they can but only with extra help. They are still human beings to be valued, treasured and assisted. The legacy of Christianity has created a West which cares for the weak, but as that inheritance is used up, and godless, selfish materialism budges it aside, we Christians must learn to stand up again for those who cannot stand up for themselves -or even stand up at all.

Cursed be he that perverteth the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say, Amen. Deut 27:19
