Thetford Castle: Steep Places Shall Fall

Thetford Castle in Norfolk was once one of the mightiest fortifications in the kingdom. Although the buildings are long gone, the impressive earthworks remain. The motte, or artificial mound on which the fort stood, is the tallest man-made mound in England, and still requires a steep stair and good constitution to successfully ascend it. Upon returning to the bottom, I recall a hint of vertigo as I meditated upon its steepness and height.

In Ezekiel 38, the Lord foretells His wrath against Gog, the godless nation which assaults His people:

“For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: ‘Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel, so that the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground’”. (vv19-20)

Kings and lords construct formidable towers, fortresses and citadels, but not one can stand against the Lord; each falls in its turn. I see great and godless nations and governments today, with much might and their impregnable steep places, but the clock is ticking, for they too shall fall before Him.

There will be on every high mountain
And on every high hill
Rivers and streams of waters,
In the day of the great slaughter,
When the towers fall. Isaiah 30:25, NKJV

Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him. Ps 72:11, AV
