A View from the Library
We Biblicists are sometimes dismissed as being ignorant people, reading only the Bible rather than the great wealth of other literature available. It is true that the scriptures are in their own league when it comes to reading materials; they alone are God-breathed, inspired by the Holy Spirit. Yet a library is second only to a church in terms of spiritual benefit. Wider reading makes us better understand the world that God created and the patterns and events which have shaped it. At Liverpool’s Central Library, a fine building about which I have already written, the top floor affords great views of the city, much as its collection of books offer views of its nature.
While the Bible offers glimpses into the mind of God, the heaven in which He dwells and the One through whom we may enter it, other books offer useful understandings of life here below. Let us be a people of the Book, as well as a people of books.
