Wallflower

Wallflowers are one of my favourites and at Burghead they grow in the wild, overlooking the North Sea. Deep, rich colours do they boast, but better still, their scent. I sometimes rather masochistically wonder which of my five senses I would lose if I had to choose one. My sight I have always valued highly, yet the wallflower can be appreciated by the visually impaired because of both the strength and beauty of its smell. Should God providentially determine to diminish or remove my vision ahead of the resurrection body, I shall relish all the more my sense of smell. With our noses may we detect the beauty of flowers unseen. Though our present, dying bodies wear out and malfunction, so we are still given a sense and awareness of God’s creative wonder, which, one day, we shall enjoy in all its fullness.
