Reflecting the Son
I was walking along the Thames at Battersea this summer. I was struck by one of the tall buildings, the windows of which reflected the blue sky and clouds. It could almost have rendered the building invisible from certain angles, as though it were just another section of skyscape. For this reflection, I thought it one of the best buildings I saw, despite London's other architecture offering stiff competition.
The best, most beautiful, most exemplary Christian is not one who plants in us an admiration for them, or a desire to be more like them. Rather, it is he or she who persuades us to be more like the Lord Jesus. A disciple who so much resembles his Master is a real success; the ‘disciple’ who just keeps on being himself, is a failure. So each day, reflect the kindness, compassion and holiness of the Lord Jesus. Do this to such an extent that you stop resembling you and become so much more like Him: you decrease, while He increases. Being like Him is where true beauty lies. Better to be a small mirror reflecting a bright sunrise than an oil painting of a dreary and depressing ditch.
