Rad Cam
The Radcliffe Camera, often shorted to the Rad Cam, is a rather grand library in Oxford, whose round, graceful walls invariably appear on the city’s publicity and its university’s prospectuses. It was built by a rather plain-speaking physician from Yorkshire, John Radcliffe (1650–1714). His patients included Queen Anne and King William III; such prestigious clients helped him amass a considerable fortune. He was seldom overawed by royalty, however, despite his Tory leanings. Upon examining William of Orange, he observed: "Why truly, I would not have your Majesty's two legs for your three kingdoms!" You can take a man out of Yorkshire, but you can't take Yorkshire out of the man.
Dying childless, Oxford itself became the chief beneficiary of his estate, in the form of this beauitful construction and numerous volumes. Sometimes, our own lack is the means by which many others are blessed; our shortages become others’ bounties. So do not marvel at what little you have by way of loaves and fish, but rather give thanks to God that He shall use our inadequacies so magnanimously.
