Martin Bottom: Hail Football, Full of Grace
From our old friend Adam Arsden:
I drafted an email last weekend to advise my church regulars that they should not come to our evening service last Sunday so they could all stay at home or go to the pub and watch the football. Members of our worship team were certainly keen not to miss it and I can say that, as Senior Pastor, it’s certainly where my heart was. So I drafted the following:
Hey Guys
You will be aware that the footy final is this Sunday evening and that none of us blokes would want to miss it. Our evening worship will therefore be cancelled to enable us all to enjoy the match. Church is all about engaging with the culture and showing how normal we are, so we could even consider this an act of evangelism, fully in keeping with our much-trumpeted vision statements and values diagram. So don’t come on Sunday night- doubtless I’ll see some of you at The Black Dog! Come on you Lions!
From your Loving Senior Pastor
And then -silly me- I realised that this email did not need to be sent: I’d closed our evening worship service down years ago! Great is Footy of the Ephesians!
BE BLESSED! I certainly am.
