Bridewort

A few years ago, I planted some small Bridewort shrubs by our chapel. It is quite a dry spot and the soil is not good, but they’ve done reasonably well, and faithfully flower each year. Planting several of the same species in a row or in a group does make for a pleasing look. Brideswort is a favourite food of the setaceous Hebrew character. This is a type of moth, which appears to have on its forewings the Hebrew letter nun (נ). The section of Psalm 119 which covers that Hebrew letter famously begins:

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet,

and a light unto my path.

Whereas the moth’s larvae enjoy munching on the Bridewort, may we feast upon God’s word, that our feet may not stumble along the rocky paths of this life.
