Christian Chamelions

Chameleons are known for altering their colours to enable them to blend in to their backgrounds, allowing them to escape their predators’ sharp teeth. This one I photographed at Lancaster’s Butterfly House. In the safe confines of that establishment, there are no predators from which to hide, but the chameleon doesn’t know that and continues to adjust his colouring accordingly.

Whereas the chameleon was beautifully designed to blend in, we Christians are not. Sometimes, we merge a little too easily into the worldly values and ignorance from which we have been saved. As the world grows darker, it is becoming well-nigh impossible for the children of light to hide in its shadows. We gospel folk are beginning to stand out. Although it makes us easier targets for those who would make us their prey, we are reminded of Jesus’ warning in Matthew 10:28:

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
