The Corn Dolly

The Corn Dolly public house in Bradford is not positioned in the most tranquil of settings, and neither does its name bespeak sophistication and luxury. Dating back to 1834, this traditional hostel has been voted Yorkshire’s best, despite its simplicity and unassuming graces. Sometimes, we just crave good, old fashioned standards and values, not trendy lighting, garish upholstery and sniffy bar staff. The twenty-first century has witnessed declines in both pubs and churches, which were once thought to be in competition for souls. Those of either category that survive and flourish will be the ones that stick to the basics and give people what they need: good value and honesty. Give me a plain chapel that preaches the gospel above a gigantic megachurch which preaches lifestyles, prosperity and whatever hobbyhorses are then fashionable.

Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. Psalm 27:11
