Faithfulness in Banff’s Old Churchyard

 
In Banff’s Old Parish Churchyard, a particularly old burial ground, is a memorial to the town’s Congregationalist pastor. It’s an aesthetically pleasing pink marble affair, bearing a very simple inscription:

For fifty years the faithful pastor of the congregational church

How many converts did he make? How many young families did he attract? Did he manage to enlarge the building? Was he an eloquent preacher? His memorial leaves us with no idea. What the text does state is an affirmation of his faithfulness. This is the chief quality that the Lord seeks in His disciples: 

‘Well done, good and faithful servant’.
