Fire Works & Works of Fire
I again find myself in the great City of Liverpool. I came to meet up with a relative to show her round. I also had an appointment at a gallery and, preidictably, a couple of churches to visit. A little before 9pm, I was delighted to have a bird’s eye view of the main firework display from my fifth floor room at the Adelphi Hotel. Somewhere close to Lime Street Station, a good fifteen minutes’ worth of pyrotechnical wizardry illuminated the urban sky which I could see from the comfort of my gigantic, Victorian window. I have seen fireworks before, of course, and this time refrained from attempting to photograph them, knowing how abysmal would be the image. Yet being so elevated, I was not looking up to them, as did most people, for they were at my level. It quite possibly made no difference to the spectacle, but it certainly saved the neck.
I have been giving much thought the Lord’s return over recent months. Paul is clear that
…we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 4:17 (NKJV)
When the Lord Jesus comes back, therefore, it will not be an event in the sky to which we look up and goggle, but a grand occasion in which we are actual participants as well as beneficiaries. If we are with the Lord when He descends, whatever celestial fireworks and explosives are detonated at that world-shattering cataclysm, it shall all be our level. We really shall enjoy the view, as well as the fantastic company.
Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 1 Corinthians 15:51-53, New King James Version
