He Cometh Forth like a Flower

This is an ancient stone coffin at Ghyll Church, Barnoldswick. Its original inhabitant is long gone, and is replaced by flowers. It reminds us of the fleeting nature of life. The stone would originally have been cut for a person wealthy enough to afford it. Death, however, cut him down, for death is the great leveller.

Job 14:2: He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
