How Very Rude

I called at the home of my former Sunday School teachers this week. A copy of the Daily Mail was laying on the sofa awaiting perusal, and its frontpage caught my attention. I thought it the daftest headline which that paper has employed over its long history. Well who would have thought it? The world’s wisest, most astute and courteous woman found the world’s brashest, most headstrong and arrogant man ‘very rude’. Clearly, there is a book to sell; clearly, little else was happening in the world that day worthy of frontpage attention.

Although there are plenty of wars, crimes and governmental follies to report, we often hear and read things of little actual import. The Gospel, on the other hand, is the most important news we need to hear, and which demands a serious, personal response. That grand message of sin’s forgiveness is barely found on any mass media: how very rude.
