M62 East/West (2025)

Mike Nelson’s M62 East/West (2025) is made up of concrete slabs, galvanised posts, nuts and blown-out tyres. It takes current pride of place at Leeds Art Gallery. I smiled as I imagined the various arty types, with their turned-up jeans, thick black glasses and avant-garde headwear fawning over this installation, with its fractured take on modern life. It is, of course, utter nonsense. A scene from everyday existence, and not a nice one, at that. Quite how much money artists receive for this kind of thing, I cannot say; what they might lack when it comes to creating beauty they likely make up in business acumen.
This garbage is what comes with forsaking a beautiful Christian heritage. We are ashamed of our past, uncomfortable in our present and afraid of our future. We deny biological sex, sneer at Creation and reject standard morality, which all combine to unleash a toxic chaos. This is why we cram our galleries with ugliness instead of beauty; it is a perfectly accurate reflection of twenty-first-century Britain. We are broken, obnoxious, and damaged; only returning to Jesus Christ and His way of living and dying can we restore hope to this benighted, disfigured land.
One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, And to inquire in His temple. Psalm 27:4
