Missing Millions
Many of us were brought up with British Home Stores. This is why we were so sad that it went bust and all its shops closed. For employees and pensioners, it was more than just a sentimental loss; their livelihoods were all but destroyed.
Sir Philip Green, its billionaire owner, presided over the chain's apparent success, while selling its stores to his wife's company, who then let them back to BHS. The black hole in the pension fund grew deeper, till eventually it was sold to a former racing driver under whom it finally went bust.
The purpose of every business is to make profit, every businessman to enrich himself. I see nothing wrong with this; he who works hard and takes a risk should be rewarded amply. Unfortunately, human greed knows no bounds. Sir Phillip has reportedly just bought a one hundred million pound yacht, while his former employees are living on the dole. Personal gain comes before the welfare of others in the world of big business.
