Prepare to Meet the Judge

I took my first proper funeral last week. It was a sad occasion; the deceased was only in her mid-fifties and left behind a small but loving family. Although they were efficient at helping to organise the funeral, and were pleasant to deal with, it was clear they were heartbroken. I don't know if the lady we were remembering was a Christian; only the Lord knows the heart. We sang a couple of hymns chosen by the family and I delivered a homily on the purpose of the funeral. I explained that one of its purposes was to call on the living to anticipate and prepare for death.

When someone we love and know enters eternity, may we consider our own appointment before the judge. No-one knows the day or the hour.
