Sir David Amess

Another murdered MP. First Jo Cox in 2016, now Sir David Amess, yesterday. Sir David was one of the few MPs who spoke out for the unborn and was not ashamed to hold socially conservative views. The atmosphere in Parliament has been particularly acrimonious recently, with one senior Member referring to Tories as ‘scum’. The mood in the country is little better. I cannot yet find details of his killer, nor an indication of motive. What I can say is that Backbenchers are sitting ducks as they run their surgeries, advertising their whereabouts without the benefit of guards and protection. Our Parliament has been robbed of two worthy members in five years. Perhaps we need to learn to treat political opponents for what they are- people with different world views and ideas, rather than as enemies, foes and ‘scum’.

Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. 1 Peter 3:9, ESV
