Sunday Evening Sermon Notes

 2 Timothy 4: 17

But the Lord stood with me

Context:

9 Be diligent to come to me quickly; 10 for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica—Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry. 12 And Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. 13 Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come—and the books, especially the parchments.14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm. May the Lord repay him according to his works. 15 You also must beware of him, for he has greatly resisted our words. 16 At my first defence no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them.

No longer a house arrest, but chained in a cold, damp cell. In Rome

  • Let down by other believers

Matt 28:20: Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Deut 31:6: Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

Romans 8:31: 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

 and strengthened me,

Isaiah 40:29: He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength.

Ps 68:35: O God, You are more awesome than Your holy places. The God of Israel is He who gives strength and power to His people. Blessed be God!

so that the message might be preached fully through me,

  • Not strength for Strength’s sake
  • But that he might still be useful
  • What message?
  • ‘Fully preached’?

Acts 20:27: For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

  • Even the hard bits. Even the tough bits.

and that all the Gentiles might hear.

  • Not just the Jews.

Isaiah 49:6 Indeed He says, `It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, that You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.'"

All must hear, though not all will respond.

Matthew 7:14: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

Literally?

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 1 Peter 5:8

Daniel 6:20: And when he came to the den, he cried out with a lamenting voice to Daniel. The king spoke, saying to Daniel, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?”...22 My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you.”

18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work

Deliver us from evil

  • Present evil
  • Temptation
  • Satan
  • Our flesh

and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom.

Philippians 1:6: being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!
