Transit of Mercury
This uninspiring photo shows a primitive but effective way of watching Mercury’s recent transit across the sun. This was observed in the UK on 9th May and caused some excitement.
Two things particularly struck me. The first is that our solar system is so incredibly interesting- a series of orbs circling each other at different speeds. The second is the regularity that this involves. We knew that Mercury would pass between the earth and the sun before it happened- it took few astronomers by surprise. This is because the universe is governed by laws and regularity, the order imposed upon it by an intelligent creative mind.
