Who is the Wokest of them all?
Disney’s latest Snow White film is being parodied and mocked from every quarter. Attempting to update the fairytale and ensuring that ‘persons of colour’ were amply represented, the most controversial issue has been the depiction of Snow White herself. The lead role is acted by Columbian-American wokester Rachel Zegler, who delighted to reveal back in 2022 that Snow White "was not going to be saved by the prince", and neither was she "going to be dreaming about true love, she's dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader that her late father told her she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave and true." Prince Charming, of course, is not an actual prince, because that is not sufficiently egalitarian. I recall my grandmother telling me that her father took her to see Disney’s original Snow White and the Seven Dwarves back in 1938. I think she got the better deal compared to her descendants who will pay good money for this silly re-telling. Truly, it is this film and the toxic culture behind it which is the poisoned apple, numbing and dazing young minds to what was a beautiful tale. Doubtless, Disney may still turn a gigantic profit, but the company’s reputation sinks further.
Fairytales aside, the great rescue mission performed by the Son of God, our Prince of Peace, is little better received by a godless world. The Lord Jesus is fairer than any prince and more loving than any charmer, but still sinners lay dead-like, poisoned and moribund, until He comes to revive and awaken. If attempts to update and modernise an 1812 fantasy story of the Brothers Grimm are singularly irritating, then designs to stifle, corrupt and desecrate the glorious gospel of grace which was first published in Eden, are more terrible still.
