Double Daffs
Of the double daffodil, American horticultural writer, Kelsey, declares:
The journey of double daffodils begins with the natural variability found within daffodil species. Through careful cultivation and selective breeding, horticulturists have nurtured and amplified this trait, resulting in the stunning double daffodils we admire today. The earliest recorded double daffodil, ‘Van Sion,’ dates back to the 16th century. Over time, through dedicated breeding efforts, a diverse array of double daffodil varieties has emerged, each with its own unique charm and allure.
I was pleased to behold a couple of ‘doubles’ growing in the tubs at the front of Salem Chapel this spring. Although I do not think the double any prettier than the single, perhaps even less so, its distinction always makes it a welcome sight. The ‘double portion’ in scripture occurs three to four times in the New King James Version of the Bible which I am wont to use. Each reference is rather precious, and I pray one of them speaks to you right now:
But he shall acknowledge the son of the unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his. Deuteronomy 21:17
But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the Lord had closed her womb. 1 Samuel 1:5
And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” 2 Kings 2:9
Instead of your shame you shall have double honour, and instead of confusion they shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess double; everlasting joy shall be theirs. Isaiah 61:7
