Wilton Church: Important Reminders

The ‘Italianate Church’ in Wilton in Wiltshire has the kind of aristocratic associations one might expect from so ostentatious a church within walking distance of a noble mansion, the seat of the Earls of Pembroke. The parish church which they funded, despite its grandeur and opulence, includes several reminders to remember those less fortunate. The weak, the needy and the poor are all mentiond in large letters on the pillars, with a number of sculpted reliefs depicting the grieving and the lonesome.

True followers of Jesus Christ will always have compassion on those who suffer, who want, who lack. Religious hypocrites will only have regard for their own dignity, their own importance, their own comfort. Beware of those who claim Christ’s name but fail to reflect His love and mercy.

And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ Matthew 25:40
