Wood for Wood
In the 1940s, the German High Command allegedly constructed a decoy airfield in Holland entirely out of wood. With meticulous care, wooden hangers, oil tanks, gun emplacements, trucks, and dummy aircraft were all made to divert Allied bombs and relieve the impact on the real airfields upon which the Axis war effort so heavily depended.
Allied photographic experts had more than enough time to observe and report it. The day finally came when the decoy was finished, fully looking the part. Early the following morning, a single RAF plane crossed the Channel, came in low, circled the airfield once, and dropped a single wooden bomb:
“Wood for wood”.
Although some have doubted that the British would have responded in this manner, risking even a single plane to send the Germans this humorous message of defiance (surely they reinforced the authenticity of their decoy airfield with real anti-aircraft guns?), witnesses have come forward to testify to its truth. The Royal Air Force was not fooled and regarded it as a joke, ‘bombing’ it in kind.
I wonder if the ‘god of this world’, the enemy of all truth, regards a great many churches in like manner. Ostensibly bases of truth and light in his dark and crooked world, some are so ill-acquainted with God’s word or so weak and distracted, that Satan need not even bother looking for a foothold. They are of no threat to him so that he just drops the odd wooden bomb. Fake bases do not deserve real explosives, and fake churches hardly warrant the enemy’s ire. Oppose his rule, however, and expect opposition.
