Christ Church, Blackburn

Blackburn’s Christ Church meets in a modern building just next to its Victorian predecessor. I was there a few weeks ago for a Bible event and found the space comfortable, and a commemoration plaque rather inspiring. Upon it is written:

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST SAYS GO... MAKE DISCIPLES (MATT. 28.19)

THIS THEN IS OUR UNCHANGING TASK IN GRIMSHAW PARK:

THE OBJECT OF EVERY ACTIVITY HERE: THE BASIS OF EVERY USE OF PREMISES: THE TRUE PURPOSE FOR EVERY GROUP YOUNG OR OLD.

WE EXIST TO BRING OTHERS TO KNOW GOD. THROUGH JESUS OUR SAVIOUR. IN WORSHIP INSTRUCTION SERVICE AND RECREATION.

The clarity of this statement is much better than most mission statements, which are usually printed cliches on bits of paper, presumably to allow them to be altered and improved annually. Not only is this rather more permanent but its evangelical fervour is unmistakable. I pray that the congregation and clergy live up to it.

Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. Ephesians 3:21
