Crompton's Grave

This is the grave of Samuel Crompton at Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire, the famous British inventor of the spinning mule which aided the industrial revolution.

While he was a child, he lost his father and was required to help the family keep afloat by spinning yarn on James Hargreaves's spinning jenny. Noting the problems with this technology, its deficiencies he resolved to improve or design something better, which he secretly worked on for six years, the famous mule being the result.

Had his father lived and been successful, young Crompton would never have felt the necessity to improve on the jenny, and the manufacture of cloth would have been slower and dearer. Truly, pain creates growth, hardship brings blessing.
