St Mary's Church, Penllech

St Mary's at Penllech in Gwynedd, Wales, is a rather pleasant old church. With a few lingering features of the older, medieval structure surviving, such as the font, the rest is from the 1840s. Instead of opting for the florid, nineteenth-century revived gothic then so much in vogue, the builders went for the simpler, neater lines of the Georgian period, which was by then rather old fashioned. This fooled me into dating it fifty years too soon, though the rustic simplicity is far more suitable than the decorated arches they might otherwise have chosen. St Mary's is delightfully Protestant, designed for plain worship and simple devotion to the God of scripture. I find this more attractive than something ostentatious, fanciful and embellished.

The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. Psalm 119:130
