Strength of character. We all have character: something which is greater than personality, I think. The latter may refer to one’s emotions and ways of thinking, but character is deeper, alluding to our ethical values and moral commitments. Characters can be formed; they can also be weaker or stronger than desired. The apostle writes in Romans 5:3-5:

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (New King James Version)

Christianity is not just about forming better characters or making nicer people, but pointing us to complete and careful trust in God’s promises both for this life and the one to come. That means still believing even when others don’t, and keeping going on even when you walk alone.
